Thank you for your interest in becoming a literacy tutor. Tutoring gives you the opportunity to make a difference in a person’s life, and to enrich your own.

A Literacy Tutor helps an individual learner improve their reading and writing skills to reach a variety of goals: obtaining employment, helping a child with homework, and reading to a grandchild, to name just a few. The tutor and learner meet weekly for a minimum of 2-hours each week. Literacy tutors complete Tutor Training in Basic Literacy. The ALP staff assess all learners entering the tutoring program and make all tutoring assignments.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Tutors must be 18 years of age or older and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. No previous teaching or tutoring experience required.

  • Tutors must have the ability to be sensitive, patient, and understanding of the learner's situation, goals, and needs.

  • Tutors must be able to read, write, and speak English comfortably.

  • Tutors must successfully complete the Tutor Orientation provided by the Ascension Parish Library Adult Literacy Program.

To volunteer as an Adult Literacy Tutor, register to attend a Basic Literacy training workshop. For additional questions or for more information, check out our Tutor Training page!
